Ruth Palmer – Director

Ruth has a wealth of experience in all things G&S, having sung lead roles with

Oundle and Peterborough G&S, Nene Opera and The Wandering Minstrels. Ruth has also performed on many occasions in The International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival at the Buxton Opera House, including being honoured with nominations for best female voice, playing Aline in The Sorcerer as well as best female performer for her role as Patience.

After playing this Society’s lead soprano for many years, Ruth became our Director in 2018. She has since directed two NODA award-winning shows, PATIENCE and IOLANTHE, using her vast experience on stage as a performer to engage, and inspire the cast to create traditional and entertaining shows.

Rachel Thomas – Musical Director (Rehearsals)

Rachel trained with Hertforshire Music Services, gaining a Music Degree from the University of Leeds.

She was introduced to G&S by her Dad, himself a performer, and played Isabel in Pirates at school (aged 11). Since then she has performed in many of the operettas, mainly taking on the soubrette roles, although she has also enjoyed playing Phyllis, Elsie and (4 times!) the Plaintiff.

She has conducted several choirs and orchestras and has MD’d several shows, including at the Minack Open Air Theatre in Cornwall. Rachel has been a class teacher of Music and Drama for many years and is now partially retired. Now that she has moved into the area she is taking on private pupils for singing, violin and piano.

Trevor French – Stage Manager

Trevor has been involved with theatre for over fifty years, and has been Stage Manager for The Stamford Gilbert and Sullivan players for fifteen years.

He first became interested in backstage work after helping out at The Peterborough Gang Show, when he offered his help to the Stage Manager at The Embassy Theatre. The latter took Trevor under his wing and taught him all aspects of backstage work, from lighting to scenery movement , as well as stage management. He has worked on every live show from rock bands to variety shows, Kent Opera and The Welsh National Opera.

Since the closure of The Embassy, he has worked as a Stage Manager for most of the amateur societies and various schools in the Peterborough area.

Trevor has also worked at theatres around the country, including the Buxton Opera House, during the G&S International Festival.

Kate Bidwell – Rehearsal Accompanist

Kate has taught piano since 2006, both privately and as a peripatetic. Since 2018, she has enjoyed taking on various accompanying roles, including school accompanist at Copthill Independent Day School, Corby Male Voice Choir and the Grantham Singers.
